Liver Cancer Survival
The Facts About Liver Cancer Survival
Liver cancer or hepatocellular carcinoma is a cancer that arises from the liver. It is can also be called as primary liver cancer or hepatoma. The liver is made up of different types of cells (bile ducts, blood vessels, and fat-storing cells). However, the liver cells that is hepatocytes make up 80% of the liver tissue. Thus, the majority of the primary liver cancers (over 90 to 95%) arises from the liver cells and is known as hepatocellular cancer or carcinoma. When patients or physicians say liver cancer, they often refer to cancer that has spread to the liver, having originated in some other organ (for instance the colon, stomach, pancreas, breast, and lung). In more specific medical terms, this type of liver cancer is called metastatic liver disease (cancer) or secondary liver cancer. Thus, the term liver cancer can refer to either metastatic liver cancer or hepatocellular cancer.
Liver Cancer - Who Suffers And How Many Survive?
Liver cancer is the fifth most common cancer affecting patients all around the world. A deadly cancer that it is, liver cancer kills almost all patients who have it within a year leading to very poor survival rates. In 1990, the World Health Organization estimated that there were around 430,000 new cases of liver cancer worldwide, and a similar number of patients passed away as a result of this disease. About three quarters of the cases of liver cancer have been seen to be found in Southeast Asia (China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Korea, and Japan). Liver cancer is also common in sub-Saharan Africa that is in Mozambique and South Africa. The frequency of liver cancer in Southeast Asia and sub-Saharan Africa is more than 20 cases per 100,000 population. In contrast to this the frequency of liver cancer in North America and Western Europe is much lower, less than 5 per every 100,000 of its population. Another thing to be noted is that the frequency of liver cancer among native Alaskans is comparable to that of Southeast Asians. Also, recent data shows that the frequency of liver cancer in the United States is overall on the rise. This increase is primarily due to chronic hepatitis C, which is an infection of the liver that causes liver cancer.
