Liver cancer prognosis:
What is the survival rate of liver cancer?
The survival rate of liver cancer was too less. According to the survey, 7% of white people survive 5 years for liver cancer in the US 1992-99 and 5% of African American people survive 5 years for liver cancer in the US 1992-99. While 6% of people with liver and intrahepatic cancer survive after 5 years in the US 1983-90 also 5-year survival rate for black people with liver and intrahepatic cancer is 4.0% in the US 1983-90. The 5-year survival rate for people with liver and intrahepatic cancer is 6.0% in the US 1983-90 and for white people with liver and intrahepatic cancer is 6.6%.
Prognosis of liver cancer:
Liver cancer prognosis depends on many things, including how early the tumor has been detected and for that surgery may be an option if the tumor is small enough and caught early. The success rate of this surgery, however, is low; only ten to twenty percent of all hepatocellular carcinoma surgeries succeed in entirely removing cancerous tissue and if the surgery is not successful then the disease is often fatal within three to six months; hence the prognosis for liver metastases is equally poor.
During this time, liver cancer can be cured only when it is found at an early stage that is before it has spread and only if the patient is healthy enough to have an operation. However, treatments other than surgery may be able to control the disease as well as help patients live longer and feel better but when a cure or control of the disease is not possible, some patients and their doctors choose palliative therapy. Palliative therapy aims to improve the quality of a person's life by controlling pain and other problems caused by the disease and also increase his survival rate.
Here the doctor may refer patients to doctors who specialize in treating cancer, or patients may ask for a referral and for hat purpose specialists who treat liver cancer include surgeons, transplant surgeons, gastroenterologists, medical oncologists, and radiation oncologists.
How can liver cancer be found out?
Liver cancer can often be found by an examining physician during a routine checkup and the doctor feels for hard lumps in the abdomen also an organ affected by a tumor is often enlarged and hard to the touch.
And if there are any irregularities, your doctor will order a blood test and also other tests. These tests can further include a liver scan, computed tomography scan, ultrasound, or magnetic resonance imaging. These tests can identify the presence of a tumor, but cannot determine if the growth is benign or malignant.
